College Affordability
College Affordability
Rising college tuition costs present a significant challenge for students and families across all socio-economic backgrounds. For example, the California State University system is slated to increase tuition by 6% annually for the next three years. High Tech High understands the financial pressures this creates and is committed to providing students and families with comprehensive support to make college more affordable. Our intentional and multi-tiered approach ensures that families of every socio-economic background and academic ability maximize their eligibility for financial aid and scholarships.
We focus on four key levels of financial support:
Federal Financial Aid: High Tech High prioritizes helping families access federal aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). With 98% of our families submitting FAFSA annually, approximately 40% of our students qualify as Pell Grant-eligible, unlocking thousands of dollars in essential funding. For students applying to private universities, we also provide guidance on completing the CSS Profile, ensuring access to additional institutional aid.
State Aid: California offers a variety of need-based grants, and High Tech High supports students in navigating these opportunities. This includes assistance with applications for Cal Grants, Middle-Income Grants, Chafee Foster Care Grants, and other state-funded programs that can significantly reduce the cost of attending college.
College/University Merit Scholarships: Our experienced college counselors help students identify and apply for merit-based scholarships offered by specific colleges and universities. Platforms like Raise.me empower students to earn micro-scholarships for their achievements, making higher education more accessible and affordable.
Independent Scholarships: High Tech High students also receive support in applying for independent and private scholarships. These include exclusive opportunities like the HTH Founders Scholarship and scholarships from local organizations, such as those offered by the San Diego Foundation, which directly benefit San Diego residents.
By providing personalized guidance across these four levels of financial aid and scholarships, High Tech High ensures that students and families are equipped to make informed decisions about college financing. Our well-above-average college placement rates are a testament to the effectiveness of this support. At High Tech High, we believe that no student’s future should be limited by financial barriers, and we are dedicated to helping every family access the resources they need to invest in a brighter future.
